It borrows from Tim Burton’s early work, ‘Edward Scissorhands’/ ‘Vincent’ along with Jean-Pierre Melville's ‘Le Samurai’ for it’s color palette and visual presentation, coupled with a sense of whimsy found in Wes Anderson’s 'The Royal Tenenbaums.' This is juxtaposed with elements of the classic cinematography found in early 70’s Kung Fu films, such as 'The Five Fingers of Death' or 'The Executioner from Shaolin,' including dutch angles, extreme close ups, and quick punch ins. East meets West for this Gothic Fairytale. |

Director: Justin SuttlesJustin Suttles is a writer/director born and raised in Jacksonville, FL. Having completed his B.F.A in film school at SCAD, he is now looking to pursue his life long passion of filmmaking in a more serious capacity. Having completed over 30 student films in his lifetime, the power of the narrative is what drives him, and the ability to transport audiences to another place is the impetus of his affinity for the craft. Always ready to start on a new project, Justin is eager to keep telling exciting stories across this wonderful, beautiful, transformative medium that we call film. Director’s StatementHominid is an idea that I've carried with me for years and years. As such, it was extremely exciting when the opportunity finally presented itself for me to make that idea into a film. Every filmmaker has their own set of inspirations that are an impetus for the art they try to make. A driving force behind all of my art is the idea of the unknown. Characters discovering something more, something unexpected, right here in our world. That, coupled with themes of inspiration in the mundane, closure and catharsis are plot elements that I find myself revisiting again and again. Hominid was the perfect culmination of all of these facets, which allowed my team and I to make a film that hopefully resonates on multiple levels. |
Treasure Nest |
Treasure Nest is a 3D animated short following the adventures of Blue a cat-like creature in search of hidden riches. Along his way Blue discovers a bird-like creature named Peanut who he reluctantly brings along in hopes that she will be the key to unlocking the treasure. Through the use of such programs as Maya ZBrush Photoshop Houdini Nuke and After Effects the Treasure Nest thesis group presents a beautifully hand-painted world in which Blue’s resolve is tested throughout his journey... eventually leading him to a prize of which he never expected.
Treasure Nest was created by JAM productions, including Mike Bourbeau, Allison Botkin, and Joy Tien. The creation process was challenging and our goal was very ambitious for our limited amount of time. Our goal was to create an exotic world with a painterly style. Since the three of us like fantasy and adventure, we decided to make a short that revolved around two opposing characters that are thrown together on a treasure hunt. We were inspired by a Tom and Jerry-esque feel, with an Indiana Jones sort of adventure. Story development was the toughest part during our production. Initially, we all had subjective preferences and extremely creative differences, so it was important for us to seamlessly merge our styles in to a cohesive package. Furthermore, working with a team, brings about varying opinions on almost every topic, and everyone has a plethora of ideas, including our families, friends, and colleagues. While we wanted to get a variety of criticism from people we trusted, everyone has differing opinions, so it was our job to weed out what we wanted and what we didn’t want, while keeping the story interesting. The entire production lasted for a little over a year. We started storyboarding around June 2013 and that phase lasted until January. For our style development, we experimented on how to integrate 2D paintings with 3D characters. We wanted to bring a painterly touch to the style of the film, while avoiding the generic look of typical computer animation. So, mimicking the render of a brush painted look (such as Van Gogh and some Impressionist artists) was our artistic goal. There were a lot of exploration and unknown areas, such as rigging characters, dynamic, special effects and animation which were technically challenging. Houdini, Maya, After Effect, Nuke and Photoshop were our primary software for making this film. In a nutshell, making Treasure Nest was like going on a journey; there were a lot of unexpected issues and surprises, however we all gained valuable experiences from it, both artistically and technically. The impact of this film enriched us in a profound way that we will never forget. |

One Night Only |
As the circus rolls into town a Clown returns home for the
first time since running away as a young boy. Director: Peter GurbielThe use of the motion image to manipulate audiences has fascinated Pete from an early age. The opportunity to profoundly haunt and connect people of divergent backgrounds is a constant inspiration throughout his work. Having explored story through commercial, music video and short film platforms, Pete’s attention is now firmly focused on his upcoming feature length projects. Director’s StatementOn the surface ONE NIGHT ONLY is a simplistic story. However the emotional undercurrents associated with growing up, remembrance and sentimentality, of childhood dreams and their adult truths, forgiveness, choice and destiny, and most critically of all – identity. Each of these explicitly human traits/conundrums/emotions impact directly on the protagonist’s journey. Through the harsh mechanism of the Clown being forced to confront his past, and with choice, ONE NIGHT ONLY presents a fairytale that isn’t so straightforward, like many of our lives. We are emotional beasts, and the story of the Clown serves to manipulate this and challenge us both irrespective of, and directly because of, our different life experiences. Interesting, the Clown – and perhaps as a function of his internal conflict –is largely a reactionary character. His environment impacts upon him, and not vice-versa. This is a mechanism that maintains focus on the Clown’s dilemma, and also lends itself to the little surprises that continue to affect the Clown constantly throughout the film, as finely judged beats of their own right, to counteract the sombre tone of protagonist’s state of mind. This stark relief also raises the stakes at the denouement – will the Clown have the courage to change the status quo and start positively and pro-actively affecting his own destiny in the future? |
